Mackenzie Nicole (singer-songwriter) and Becca Lane (NAMI Philadelphia) on bipolar disorder and suicidal thoughts. September is Suicide Prevention & Awareness Month, and pop artist Mackenzie Nicole shares her story on Bipolar 1 Disorder, having suicidal thoughts at the young age of 6 years old, her mental breakdown, the personality and behavior changes that came with it, and the mood swings of mania and depression that are part of bipolar. How her new album Mystic is a musical tribute to her mental health odyssey, and the Mystic Film being a both a visual and musical telling of her story through a series of very personal music videos. Mackenzie also talks about OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), what saved her at a young when experiencing mental illness, the difficulty of accepting help, and why is was overjoyed after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. What she learned in recovery, her thoughts on self-medication, having an addictive personality, her experience with therapy and medication, and why she’s now the happiest and most creative she’s ever been. Next, we have mental health expert Becca Lane of NAMI Philadelphia who explains what Bipolar Disorder 1 and 2 are, how often mood swings occur, how bipolar can often be disguised as other mood disorders such as depression, anxiety or ADHD. The coping skills, therapies, and medications often used specifically for bipolar. Becca also weaves in her own story of bipolar disorder, how she successfully manages her recovery, and the joyful life you can achieve after finding the right help, and NAMI Philly’s “Ending the Silence” Program.
